Orwellvale Casino
The casino is the carriage barn on this lot, at the bottom of the garden
Orwellvale Casino is the carriage barn behind the garden of this house. It belongs to the house, shares its address and is run by the same people, and you reach it by walking down the garden from the hotel.
The boarded path is about fifty paces long. It is lit, has a rail along the whole of it, and is cleared and salted through the winter. Somebody is on the barn door every hour the room is open.

Five tables in a barn built for two horses
The casino floor has five tables and a short bar where the tack room used to be. On a Thursday in November two tables are open and it's a quiet place to spend an evening; in August all five are going and the door counts people in.
The casino room dates from 1877, the same year as the house. The stalls came out in 1961 and the floor was relaid in the original boards, and the roof timbers are open above you. A wood stove at the far end is lit from October and is the only heating in the building.
The casino has no dress code apart from a practical one. In January the walk down is fifty paces in whatever the island is doing, so wear shoes you can manage that in.
The age here is nineteen
Prince Edward Island sets the casino age at 19. That catches visitors out, since most of the world says 18 and so do several Canadian provinces, but the house applies 19 to everyone.
The casino checks photo ID at the door on every visit, so a guest who sat down to supper in the dining room an hour earlier is asked again. Accepted ID is a passport, a provincial driver licence or a provincial photo card; a photograph of one on a telephone doesn't count.
No one under 19 comes into the casino at any hour, and that covers the time when the room is shut and the stove is being cleaned out.
Agreed with a person, written down
Limits are set on the casino floor with whoever is working it. Give them your figure before you sit down and it's written down and kept to for the evening, or ask for a suggestion and they'll offer one.
Self-exclusion from the casino is arranged in person at the front desk. It can't be done in the barn or by telephone. You sign at the desk, it takes effect the same evening, and it is lifted only when you come back to the desk in person.
The casino floor offers no credit of any kind, and there is no cash machine in the barn, the garden or elsewhere on this lot.
The website has no games, bets or deposits
This is a land-based casino in a carriage barn behind a small hotel in Charlottetown. The site describes the room and the house in front of it, and nothing here runs a game, takes a stake, opens an account or moves money.
To play, come to Hillsborough Street, walk down the garden, show identification at the barn door and take a seat. That is the only way in, and none of it can be done from this page.
